Reading

April 8, 2018 By Rob Hackbarth Leave a Comment

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”    Joseph Addison On occasion, I am asked for reading material recommendations. The most influential, notable books I have read throughout my life include: The Bible Man’s Search for Meaning, Dr. Viktor Frankl The Laws of Success, Napoleon Hill The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Steven R. Covey The Greatest Salesman in the World, Og Mandino Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill Gung Ho, Ken Blanchard The Road Less … [Read more...]

Plant A Tree

March 25, 2018 By Rob Hackbarth Leave a Comment

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.”  Chinese Proverb Hopefully you are different than most people. But, by now – in mid-March – many New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside for a great number of well-intentioned folks.  The fact that it is still early in the year can be an uncomfortable reminder of something we really meant to do, yet have once again failed. This year was going to be the year we get it done! Lose weight. Exercise weekly. … [Read more...]

Triggerfish

“He listens well who takes notes.” Dante Alighieri It is one of those hot August days that we are known for in the deep South. Once again, I am enjoying one of my favorite roles - captain on an offshore fishing trip. The targeted fish is red snapper. Thanks to the regulators, the past limited nine-day red snapper season has been expanded to over forty days. A huge bonus for the recreational fishing population. We are fishing some reefs where we have caught red snapper in the past. … [Read more...]

Simple Leadership

March 8, 2018 By Rob Hackbarth Leave a Comment

There is a huge amount of information on leadership. If you decided to make the study of leadership a full-time job for the rest of your life, you would not be able to make a dent in reviewing the available material. The list of books on leadership is long and diverse.  American history is replete with accounts of exemplary leadership from among presidents and members of the Armed Forces. Conventions and seminars abound with workshops and keynotes on this popular topic.  Scores of … [Read more...]

“Investing in yourself is the best investment you will ever make. It will not only improve your life, it will improve the lives of all those around you.” Robin Sharma I am a business owner. You are a business owner. Yes, all of the readers of this newsletter are business owners. And the one business that all of us own is the business of our personal life. It is the most important business you will ever own. Because of this truth, business articles that are written for business owners, also … [Read more...]

Semantics

February 19, 2018 By Rob Hackbarth Leave a Comment

“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that is has taken place.”     George Bernard Shaw As I begin the oral presentation of my thesis, I point to the triangle on my large presentation pad, and say, “If your concept of love is a circle” – then pointing to the circle I continue, “and my concept of love is a triangle, our communication is going to be difficult because of differing definitions of the words we use.” The primary  objective  is to illustrate for my classmates … [Read more...]

Change The Light Bulb

January 22, 2018 By Rob Hackbarth Leave a Comment

“You can never solve a problem on the level on which it was created.”          Albert Einstein, Ph.D. Our grandson Philip is helping Carol (his grandmother and my wife) to get our home prepared for the family gathering for Christmas. One task involves changing the little light bulbs that are inside the huge outside globes. Simple enough, right? When Philip asks Carol how to get inside the housing that contains these tiny bulbs, her answer is delivered with full confidence – it appears she has … [Read more...]

Wow!

January 15, 2018 By Rob Hackbarth Leave a Comment

“Celebrate what you want to see more of.” Tom Peters “Wow” hollers grandson John (JR to his siblings) as he pulls a strip of paper off of one of his Christmas presents. Even though the contents are not visible, his elevated enthusiasm for the yet to be seen toy is highly contagious to family members engrossed in this scene. Each strip of paper, revealing more and more of the gift, is followed by another “Wow”. Later during the day, in a quieter moment - which is difficult to find on … [Read more...]

Boom-Boom Room

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.”       Henry David Thoreau As I walk into the room, I see Bert whom I had earlier agreed to meet here. I am a new resident in Mobile, having arrived a couple of weeks earlier in response to a job offer and promotion from the regional director of Woolco, a division of the F.W. Woolworth Company, my employer. When you are single and in your 20s, getting settled into a new town is a process full of … [Read more...]

Behavior Modification

December 18, 2017 By Rob Hackbarth Leave a Comment

“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”  Sir Winston Churchill Identification of costly behavior is one of the topics in our meeting. The ideas expressed on how to do this are really good. One committee member states the obvious; “If we identify the costly behavior without any effort to change that conduct, we are left with the potential for costly incidents.”  Two other staffers express the need to have ‘buy-in’ from all team members. With similar thoughts, another member … [Read more...]
